Search Engines

Without search engines, the internet would be impossible to navigate. But even with search engines people still find it impossible. I see it all the time, some people use very vague search terms etc... and don't know how to improve their results.
Search engines don't list everything, they list sites that have been submitted, or appropriate sites that their spiders have picked up.

Google

I will aim the content of this page at Google, simply because I think it's the best search engine. Google also provude the search solutions for many other websites, including Yahoo! Search.
Google is easy to use, and doesn't have a bloated interface, hence it's very fast. Google can be found at http://www.google.com.

Don't be vague

The more words you enter, the less results are going to appear, it's obvious if you think about it. More pages will have the word help in (309m), than pages with both the words help and computer(9.8m).
Type as many words as you need, they don't even have to be in order.
If you was to have Yahoo! profile problems, I know some people would type just Yahoo! or just Profiles.
They are too vague, Yahoo! has many services, and many services have profiles.

Search Logic

One can apply logic to the search engine to make it do certain things.
Logical Operators are NOT AND OR. And in google, you use - + OR.
NOTE: AND is automatically implied, that is, every word must appear in a page, as though the AND operator had been typed.
NOTE: Small words are removed from your search in google. For example in,how, the. If it's important, preceed the word directly with an + example +the.
Note: If you want to use the word OR AND NOT in your search, google will make it a logic operator. So also preceed those words with a +.
Examples

Search for linux, but not mandrake
If you wanted to search for linux, but didn't want any mandrake results, you would search for:
Linux -Mandrake

Search for Linux or Windows
If you wanted to search for information on either Linux OR Windows, you would search for:
Linux OR Windows

Search for Information about Windows and Linux
If you wanted to search for pages with information about windows and linux on the page, you would search for:
Linux Windows - Remember, the AND is implied

Exact phrase Match

If you watned to search for a page that had the exact phrase you ented, you probably will have noticed it picks up every page with all those words, wherever in the page, and this is not what you wanted.
But if you put in a phrase in double qoutes, it will only return pages that contain that exact phrase, that is all the words together as given.
For Example: "Freddy's Utilities Plus" will only return pages that have that exact term in them.
It would not return pages that had freddy's at the top, utilities half way down, and plus somewhere else.

Our Website

Google currently spiders the entire, or part of this website daily.
For many pages, we are near the top of the result for Yahoo! help terms.
We are currently 4th for Yahoo! Chat Help, although this changes often.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you will be now more aware of searching using google, and getting better results!
